On Thursday, November 13, 2025, the Faculty of Education Sciences and Psychology of the University of Latvia hosted Tatjana Bicjutko’s open seminar “Ethical Artificial Intelligence in Language Teaching: From Understanding to Action”. The participants were the colleagues and researchers of Teacher Education Department and other interested participants from various fields.
During the seminar, Tatjana Bicjutko introduced the new Erasmus+ project “New-Gen Language Teachers: Empowering Language Teaching with Ethical AI-Enhanced Guidance”, which she will coordinate together with professor Indra Odiņa. The international collaboration plans, project goals and planned results were presented: a 20-hour training module on the ethical use of AI in language teaching; a gamified toolkit; an online course (MOOC) for teacher professional development piloted by more than 200 future teachers in 3 countries; and a handbook for BA/MA study programmes.
Addressing current challenges in language education, teacher professional identity, and the ethical use of technology, Tatjana Bicjutko highlighted future research directions – teachers’ digital resilience, human-centred approaches to technology, and the ethical integration of AI in higher education. She emphasised that language teachers play a strategically important role in the AI era, as they work with language as a carrier of meaning, culture, and identity and often stand at the forefront of digital innovation.
The participants were invited to join the project, collaborate in research, and work together to advance ethical AI practices, thus strengthening teachers’ professional autonomy and teaching quality in the digital age.
