The Erasmus+ project “Encouraging Students to Enhance Their STEAM Skills in Order to Address Real-World SDG-Related Challenges” (STEAMinSDGs) has reached an exciting milestone: the launch of its pilot phase. The STEAMinSDGs project, co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme, continues to empower educators and engage students across Europe in building a more sustainable future—one lesson at a time. The University of Latvia, a key academic partner in the project, has developed a comprehensive educational resource designed to help teachers integrate STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Action Plan aims to empower educators in guiding students to sustainable food production and consumption habits, and to be aware of the opportunities to make decisions that contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in terms of food choice, preparation, care for the environment and healthy lifestyles.
The Action Plan on Sustainable Bread comprises five lesson plans:
Introductory Lesson on Sustainable Food (Science)
Bread consumption and eating habits (Science, Mathematics)
Bread-making and processing circle (Science, Mathematics, Engineering)
How to cook sustainable bread at home (Technology, Art)
Sustainable food system – Necessity and possibility to reduce food waste (Sciences, Art)
On December 16, 2024 the project members of the University of Latvia: Indra Odina, Agita Klempere-Sipjagina and Anna Kvelde piloted the materials with the would-be teachers, implementing creative, hands-on activities that encourage students to explore pressing sustainability challenges.
These classroom experiences aim to deepen students’ critical thinking, problem-solving, and interdisciplinary learning—core elements of STEAM education—while also promoting global awareness and responsibility.
Feedback from participating teachers and students has been collected throughout the pilot phase. This valuable input will be used to refine and enhance the guidebook and accompanying materials, ensuring they are impactful, practical, and aligned with real classroom needs.
